The Hate Crime Statistics Act, 28 U.S.C. § 534 (HCSA), passed in 1990 and modified in 2009 by the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, [1] requires the Attorney General to collect data on crimes committed because of the victim's race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.
The Intelligence Branch was formally established in 2005. The IB, along with the CTD, the FBI Counterintelligence Division, and the FBI Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate, became part of the newly established FBI National Security Branch in 2006. As of 2014, the IB is no longer part of NSB and now operates as a department of the FBI. [4]
