Butch began playing golf from an early age, as did his three younger brothers, Craig, Bill, and Dick (1947-2006), who also all became golf professionals. In 1962, Butch graduated from New Rochelle High School. Harmon attended the University of Houston, and served in the U.S. Army for three years, seeing duty in the Vietnam War. [1]
Golf instruction consists of five primary skills: shots from a tee (most notable: driving that uses a driver), full shots from the ground (mostly known as "iron shots", pitching (or 3/4 shots designed for distance control, chipping (short shots around the green the require less than a full swing), putting (1 club preferably "the putter") and course strategy or gamesmanship.
Throughout his career, Leadbetter has also written eight books about golf swings. He has also overseen the development of various golf training media, products and services, including the SwingSetter, SwingSetter Pro and a number of A Swing approved training aids released with the book.
Claude Harmon also finished in third place at the 1959 U.S. Open, which was held at his home course at Winged Foot. From 1945 to 1978, Harmon was the head professional at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York , and also served as the winter professional for many years at the Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida . His father Claude Harmon won the 1948 Masters Tournament. His brothers Butch, Craig and Bill were also ranked in Golf Digest's Top 50 Teachers. Harmon was the professional at the River Oaks Country Club between 1977 and 2001. After leaving that position, he established two teaching centres in Houston, Texas.
