In 1973, Kuala Lumpur was separated from Selangor to become a separate territory under the direct control of the central government. Labuan, a British territory since 1847 that was joined to North Borneo in 1946, was split from Sabah in 1984 to become a second federal territory. A third, Putrajaya, was split from Selangor in 2001.
