The members of the Cerambycidae (Longhorn Beetles) family are named for their long antennae, sometimes exceedingly so. The antennae of males are usually longer than those of females, and often the antennae are attached to the head in a strange notch at the front of the eye. Styloxus fulleri is a smaller species, at about 12–13 mm in length.
It can be distinguished from other grain beetles from its slight projections or knobs on each front corner of the pronotum, and its club-shaped antennae. However, other Ahasverus species look very similar and particular confusion can occur with Ahasverus rectus , which is also found in grain bins in North America.
Antennae (sg.: antenna) (sometimes referred to as "feelers") are paired appendages used for sensing in arthropods. Antennae are connected to the first one or two segments of the arthropod head. They vary widely in form but are always made of one or more jointed segments.
In a few beetles within the same subfamily Lepturinae, the males establish copulation by mounting the females with their head placed over the female's and grasping an antenna with their mouthparts. [9] They pull on the antennae until they are copulating, with the male's abdomen probing down to make contact with the female's ovipositor.
For these beetles to successfully colonize a new habitat, such as an area that has been burned by forest fire, it must be of high enough quality and in close enough range. Studies have shown that several Monochamus species use the pheromones of bark beetles as kairomones to find suitable host habitats quickly and efficiently, enabling them to ...
The scientists developed a teensy-tiny black-and-white camera that can comfortably be mounted on a live beetle—specifically a death-feigning beetle and a Pinacate beetle.
Anthrenus carpet beetles are small beetles a few (1.8-4mm) millimeters long with a rounded shape. Their antennae bear small clubs at the end, which are larger in the males than in females. Many have a delicate pattern, with a dark body covered in colorful scales of various brown, tan, red, whitish and grey hues.
