Wakefield is a village in the town of South Kingstown, Rhode Island, United States, and the commercial center of South Kingstown.Together with the village of Peace Dale, it is treated by the U.S. Census as a component of the census-designated place identified as Wakefield-Peacedale.
Peace Dale was established as a village in 1793 by South Kingstown industrialist Rowland Hazard who named the village in honor of his wife, Mary Peace Hazard. Around 1804, Hazard reputedly pioneered the use of carding machines to process wool in Rhode Island.
The village of Charlestown is in the northwestern part of the CDP, at the northern head of Ninigret Pond. The hamlet of Charlestown Beach is in the southern part of the CDP, separated by a tidal inlet from the physical Charlestown Beach along the Atlantic.
