The Son of God Goes Forth to War (1812) is a hymn by Reginald Heber [1] which appears, with reworked lyrics, in the novella The Man Who Would Be King (1888), by Rudyard Kipling and, set to the Irish tune The Moreen / The Minstrel Boy, in the film The Man Who Would Be King (1975), directed by John Huston. [2]

The melody was first published in the Collection of Tunes (1761) by Caleb Ashworth [3] from Lancashire, who presumably "heard and liked" the tune, but as a setting for the paraphrase of Psalm 50 by Isaac Watts, beginning "The God of Glory sends his Summons forth, / Calls the South Nations, and awakes the North".
