State Highway 6 (SH 6) runs from the Red River, the Texas–Oklahoma state line, to northwest of Galveston, where it is known as the Old Galveston Highway. In Sugar Land and Missouri City, it is known as Alvin-Sugarland Road and runs perpendicular to Interstate 69 / U.S. Highway 59 (I-69/US 59).
Loop 197 was designated on February 5, 1960, as a loop off SH 146 in Texas City as a replacement for SH 146 when it was rerouted west of town. On September 27, 2012, the section from SH 146 east to 19th Avenue was removed from the highway system and returned to Texas City and the remainder was changed to Spur 197.

To the northeast, RM 620 enters the city of Austin and intersects RM 2222. The road then intersects RM 2769 just inside the Williamson County line. To the east, the road travels concurrently with the free service roads of the SH-45 toll road crossing US-183, the 183A Toll Road , and FM 734 before separating from SH 45 and entering Round Rock.
