GIS and RS training at the University of Pune started in June 2001 as a one-year diploma course for students from interdisciplinary backgrounds. Dr. (Ms.) Vrishali Deosthali started the course, aiming to create professionals armed with sound knowledge and practical experience, to serve in the remote sensing and GIS industry.
Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object, in contrast to in situ or on-site observation. The term is applied especially to acquiring information about Earth and other planets .
