The Pali commentaries distinguish between karuṇā and mettā in the following complementary manner: Karuna is the desire to remove harm and suffering (ahita-dukkha-apanaya-kāmatā) from others; while mettā is the desire to bring about the well-being and happiness (hita-sukha-upanaya-kāmatā) of others. Buddhaghosa specifies paññā in relation to Buddhist meditation as being specifically vipassanā-paññā ("insight wisdom"), meaning insight knowledge endowed with virtue. [ 14 ] Buddhaghosa defines vipassanā-paññā as “knowing in a particular mode separate from the modes of perceiving ( sañjānana ) and cognizing ( vijjānana )”. [ 6 ]
