Carrickmacross (Irish: Carraig Mhachaire Rois, meaning 'rock of the wooded plain') [4] is a town in County Monaghan, Ireland. The population was 5,745 at the 2022 census, [1] making it the second-largest town in the county. Carrickmacross is a market town which developed around a castle built by the Earl of Essex in 1630.
Carrick won the championship for the third year in a row on Sunday 9 October 1910 at Derrygooney, Bawn. Carrickmacross Emmets and Monaghan Harps met in the final of the football championship of the county. Both teams were at full strength and Monaghan Harps fielded the strongest team that has represented the North for some time.
