The Cagayan Valley (with tributaries Magat, Ilagan, Mallig and Siffu of the Mallig Plains, and Chico which reaches the Cagayan just 30 miles from the sea) is cut-off from the rest of Luzon by mile-high forested mountain ranges joined at Balete Pass near Baguio.
The Itawes are among the earliest inhabitants of the Cagayan Valley. Other than their mother tongue (categorized as closely related to Gaddang [1]), they speak Ibanag and Ilocano. They are not very different from other lowland Christianized Filipino ethnic groups in terms of livelihood, housing, and traditions.

It is spoken especially in Tuguegarao and Solana in Cagayan, as well as in the municipalities of Cabagan, San Pablo, Tumauini, Santa Maria, Santo Tomas, Ilagan, Gamu, Naguilian, and Reina Mercedes and San Mariano in Isabela. There are also several speakers of the Ibanag language in Abulug, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Lal-lo, and Tuao in Cagayan.
