It is located in south central Saskatchewan, Canada, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) north-west of the city of Regina. It flows into the Qu'Appelle River via Last Mountain Creek, [4] which flows past Craven. It is approximately 93 km (58 mi) long, and 3 km (1.9 mi) across at its widest point.
The protected area includes several small islands, including Bird, Royal, and Coney. The northernmost inlet for Last Mountain Lake, Lanigan Creek and its tributary Saline Creek, runs through the heart of the park. Several dykes were built to help control water flow and levels. Natural grasslands make up about 54% of the total protected area.
In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, the RM of Lost River No. 313 had a population of 252 living in 71 of its 80 total private dwellings, a change of 4.1% from its 2016 population of 242. With a land area of 549.96 km 2 (212.34 sq mi), it had a population density of 0.5/km 2 (1.2/sq mi) in 2021. [10]

The entire course of the river is in the boreal forest [4] ecozone of Canada. Caribou Creek is a tributary of Stewart Creek, which flows south and into the east-flowing Torch River. Torch River is a tributary of the Saskatchewan River as it flows into the Saskatchewan River Delta.
As a result of its status as a main access point to the Churchill River, Missinipe is home to a float plane service, a canoe outfitter, and fishing outfitters. [5] While generally empty during winter, the community is home to a seasonally operated general store, tourist cabins and other accommodations in the summer months.
