The marionberry (Rubus L. subgenus Rubus) is a cultivar of blackberry released in 1956 by the USDA Agricultural Research Service breeding program in cooperation with Oregon State University. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It is named after Marion County, Oregon , where the berry was bred and tested extensively in the mid-20th century.
The term "cane fruit" or "cane berry" applies to any Rubus species or hybrid which is commonly grown with supports such as wires or canes, including raspberries, blackberries, and hybrids such as loganberry, boysenberry, marionberry and tayberry. [7] The stems of such plants are also referred to as canes.
The plant has a growth habit similar to that of the blackberry. Fruits grow on short laterals on prickly canes 1.8 to 2.1 m (6 to 7 ft) long. [2] The cropping period is long, from early mid- to late-summer. Having a strong flavor, the tayberry is less acidic than the loganberry. [2]
Loganberry plants are sturdy and more disease- and frost-resistant than many other berries. However, they are not very popular with commercial growers due to several problems which increase labor costs, since the plants tend to be thorny and the berries are often hidden by the leaves.
Rubus ursinus is a wide, mounding shrub or vine, growing to 0.61–1.52 metres (2–5 feet) high, and more than 1.8 m (6 ft) wide. [3] The prickly branches can take root if they touch soil, thus enabling the plant to spread vegetatively and form larger clonal colonies.

Rubus parviflorus is a dense shrub up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) tall with canes no more than 1.5 centimeters (1 ⁄ 2 inch) in diameter, often growing in large clumps which spread through the plant's underground rhizome. Unlike many other members of the genus, it has no prickles.
