In biology, tissue is an assembly of similar cells and their extracellular matrix from the same embryonic origin that together carry out a specific function. [1] [2] Tissues occupy a biological organizational level between cells and a complete organ. Accordingly, organs are formed by the functional grouping together of multiple tissues. [3]
The epiblast was first discovered by Christian Heinrich Pander (1794-1865), a Baltic German biologist and embryologist. With the help of anatomist Ignaz Döllinger (1770–1841) and draftsman Eduard Joseph d'Alton (1772-1840), Pander observed thousands of chicken eggs under a microscope, and ultimately discovered and described the chicken blastoderm and its structures, including the epiblast. Epithelium or epithelial tissue is a thin, continuous, protective layer of cells with little extracellular matrix. An example is the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. Epithelial (mesothelial) tissues line the outer surfaces of many internal organs, the corresponding inner surfaces of body cavities, and the inner surfaces of blood vessels.
They are named thymosins because they were originally isolated from the thymus, but most are now known to be present in many other tissues. [1] Thymosins have diverse biological activities, and two in particular, thymosins α 1 and β 4 , have potentially important uses in medicine, some of which have already progressed from the laboratory to ...
In biology, matrix (pl.: matrices) is the material (or tissue) in between a eukaryotic organism's cells. The structure of connective tissues is an extracellular matrix. Fingernails and toenails grow from matrices. It is found in various connective tissues. It serves as a jelly-like structure instead of cytoplasm in connective tissue.
Dense connective tissue also known as fibrous tissue [8] is subdivided into dense regular and dense irregular connective tissue. [9] Dense regular connective tissue, found in structures such as tendons and ligaments , is characterized by collagen fibers arranged in an orderly parallel fashion, giving it tensile strength in one direction.
Around 31% of Millennials currently have under $1,000 in savings. Another 21% have between $1,000-$5,000, and then 9% of Millennials have $5,001-$10,000. Does that seem bleak? Yes. Absolutely. The ...
This tissue is thus the initial site where pathogenic agents, such as bacteria that have breached an epithelial surface, are challenged and destroyed by cells of the immune system. [1] In the past, the designations areolar tissue, adipose tissue, and reticular tissue have been listed as subsets of loose connective tissue. However, they are no ...
