The outpost was located along the Oregon Trail near Kearney, Nebraska. The town of Kearney took its name from the fort. The "e" was added to Kearny by postmen who consistently misspelled the town name. [2] A portion of the original site is preserved as Fort Kearny State Historical Park by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. [3]

The Kearney Micropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties in Nebraska, anchored by the city of Kearney. As of the 2010 census , the area had a population of 52,591 (though a July 1, 2011 estimate placed the population at 53,278).

The Tri-Cities is an area of Nebraska consisting of the cities of Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney.It has a population of 174,530 as of 2020. [1] [2] [3] The Tri-Cities region is not an official Metropolitan Statistical Area or Combined Statistical Area, however the region would be Nebraska's third largest if it was, behind Lincoln but ahead of Sioux City.
