There were no asthma-related deaths and few asthma-related serious adverse events when salmeterol is used with an inhaled steroid. [5] [6] At least with formoterol, an increased risk appears to be present even when steroids are used [7] and this risk has not been ruled out for salmeterol. [8]
Both genes display some degree of polymorphic variation in humans, which may explain how some patients respond better to inhaled corticosteroid therapy than others. [14] [15] However, not all asthma patients respond to corticosteroids and large sub groups of asthma patients are corticosteroid resistant. [16]
Inhaled or nebulized corticosteroids can also be used. [151] For adults and children who are in the hospital due to acute asthma, systemic (IV) corticosteroids improve symptoms. [195] [196] A short course of corticosteroids after an acute asthma exacerbation may help prevent relapses and reduce hospitalizations. [197]
Fluticasone propionate, sold under the brand names Flovent and Flonase among others, is a glucocorticoid steroid medication. [8] When inhaled it is used for the long term management of asthma and COPD. [8] In the nose it is used for hay fever and nasal polyps. [9] [10] It can also be used for mouth ulcers. [11] It works by decreasing inflammation.
Formoterol, also known as eformoterol, is a long-acting β 2 agonist (LABA) used as a bronchodilator in the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Formoterol has an extended duration of action (up to 12 h) compared to short-acting β 2 agonists such as salbutamol (albuterol), which are effective for 4 h to 6 h.
