By the 1800s, most new fireplaces were made up of two parts, the surround and the insert. The surround consisted of the mantelpiece and side supports, usually in wood, marble or granite. The insert was where the fire burned, and was constructed of cast iron often backed with decorative tiles.
The American Encaustic Tiling Company [1] was founded in New York, New York, in 1875, later establishing a factory in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1892. [2] Their tiles were intended to compete with the English tiles that were selling in the United States for use in fireplaces and other architectural locations.
The primary functions of a fireback are to protect the wall at the back of the fireplace and radiate heat from the fire into the room. The protection was especially important where the wall was constructed of insubstantial material such as daub (a mud and straw mixture coating interwoven wooden wattles), brick or soft stone.
