The brand the previous owners put in was called Crane and they've been terrible. We're considering the American Standard Colony but after reading through this subreddit, I see nothing but praise for Toto Drake's and anger towards American Standard lol. Edit: Ordered a single TOTO Drake II, Elongated and ADA height. We'll see how it goes.
I’ve sold virtually every toilet manufacturer in my 25 years in the industry. Toto has been consistently the best for the last fifteen of them. They are simply better. Get a 1.28 GPF (or 1.6 if you can find one) Tornado flush with CefionTec and forget about it. Parts are parts, sometimes they wear, depending upon water quality and chemical ...
Bottom line: don't buy a toilet that doesn't max out their test. Standardization. If you want to buy a toilet for life, plan to have to repair it occasionally. Get one that uses either a Toto or Fluidmaster-type flush valve. These are widely-accepted designs, easy to find, inexpensive to purchase, and easy to install.
I've got a Toto S300e model. IMO, the one feature any bidet seat you buy ought to have is the deodorizing system. It's basically a fan with a charcoal filter that's built into the bidet seat, and it runs during and for a couple minutes after the toilet is used. With the deodorizer fan the "bathroom odor" issue is a thing of the past.
Toto Drake II if you want a two-piece toilet. Toto Ultramax II if you’re looking for a one-piece toilet. Best bang for your buck would be those two but there are always other Toto’s if you’re looking for different aesthetics…skirted bowls etc. ————— One thing…. There’s no need at all to buy a dual flush toilet these days.
The TOTO C5 is an older model, not recommended a lot because of the way the back is shaped. Its uncomfortable, bulky, and only has limited warm water (30 sec). Since you're looking at the C5 I would suggest upgrading to the TOTO S500e. The seat is much more comfortable with unlimited warm water.
Our toilet (I believe this one) has been off 4 times since we bought it not quite 2 years ago. Twice were not its fault. (Turns out our cast iron stack rusted from the inside and the flaking rust plugged it. Stack was replaced a year ago.) Twice because of copious amounts of toilet paper, courtesy of two different toddlers.
Toto is the best but also the most expensive.. but you get what you pay for. I installed the Philtre bidet seat on all of my airbnb toliet's and have had raving reviews from my guests thus far, and it's quite a bit cheaper than toto.. plus it has a wireless remote control, rather than being attached to the seat itself, which has been more convenient for pushing the buttons.
The SLi 2000 (you may see the SLi 1000 listed but this is only a toilet, and doesn't include a bidet) is ~$2,200, while their integrated unit that includes more features is ~$3,700. They include the common features like adjustable temperature for the seat, air, and water, instant heater, deodorizer, and remote control.
It's only 1.6 gallons per flush, yet it's significantly more powerful than the 3.5 gallon per flush 1980s toilet that it replaced. I installed it using the Korky Wax Free Toilet Seal, but I've also had good luck with the Fluidmaster Better Than Wax Toilet Seal on another toilet that I replaced.
