For this reason the vowel length mark is often omitted in dictionaries and other resources on NAmE phonemic transcriptions. This website also uses the length mark in British transcriptions only, although adding a vowel length option for NAmE is in the roadmap.
The phonetic alphabet covers the whole range of sounds present in different languages, therefore only a subset of characters is used to transcribe English speech. So far, so good. Then why is it that phonetic transcription causes so much confusion?
