When you open the email, you'll also see the Certified Mail banner above the message details. When you get a message that seems to be from AOL, but it doesn't have those 2 indicators, and it isn't alternatively marked as AOL Official Mail, it might be a fake email. Make sure you mark it as spam and don't click on any links in the email.

While the default setting is to show all images except for those in spam emails, turning the setting off can increase the privacy and security of your account by disabling potentially malicious images and content. 1.
