e. BBC Radio 5 Live is a British national radio station owned and operated by the BBC. It broadcasts mainly news, sport, discussion, interviews and phone-ins. It is the principal BBC radio station covering sport in the United Kingdom, broadcasting virtually all major sports events staged in the UK or involving British competitors.
It is replaced on the 18th with a summer sports magazine Sportsbeat. 10–26 June – For the first time, the BBC provides full radio coverage of an international football tournament when it broadcasts live commentary of every game of Euro 92. 25 July–9 August – Radio 5 provides full live coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympics.
The channel's launch on 30 March 1997 (Easter Day) at 6 p.m. After a brief voice over by continuity presenter David Vickery, the first broadcast was the Spice Girls singing a re-written version of Manfred Mann's hit "5-4-3-2-1" as "1-2-3-4-5", with Emma Bunton being the first person to appear on-screen on the channel.
Alan Green (born 25 June 1952) is a Northern Irish former sports commentator, mainly on football but also on golf, rowing and the Olympic Games.
