The episode flashes back to 15 years in the past when Mellie and Fitz are newlyweds staying in Fitz's father's home. Fitz's father Big Jerry introduces them to Cyrus Beene and they begin grooming Fitz for his political career. Fitz and his father clash and Cyrus starts to leave after Fitz says he will not use his military record for political gain.
Princess Emily was having an affair with her bodyguard, making Prince Richard a suspect. After persuasion from Olivia, Fitz attends Mellie's swearing in. Mellie offers to stand by Fitz and pretend that he didn't cheat on her if he apologizes. He says no, and tells her he wants a divorce. Fitz tells Olivia that he asked Mellie for a divorce.

Before that can be enacted Fitz reveals to Mellie that Olivia is command and that she killed vice president Luna Vargas. Despite the revelation, Mellie goes along with Olivia's plan in hopes of restoring peace with Bashran. Mellie demands that Fitz go back to Vermont, but he refuses.
Meanwhile, Fitz begins looking for a new vice president. He initially decided to have Mellie take the place, but Cyrus speaks up against it. Mellie later pushes for Virginia Senator Susan Ross to be nominated for the position. Fitz then hires Leo Bergen to assist Susan, but Leo consistently puts pressure on Susan, who decides to quit the race.
Meanwhile, at OPA, Huck discovers one of the high-ranking people that hired Maya to kill Mellie. Since everything went well, President Mellie continues with the ceremony and the parade. Afterwards, Olivia argues with Fitz about him ordering Rowan to overthrow Maya. Mellie, enraged by the argument, leaves the room to choose her dress.
