Accurate information on the uniforms and military organization of the Bakumatsu, Boshin War, and Meiji Restoration is sparse. The samurai of the time were too busy yelling at each other and killing things, and European observers were too busy trying to profit off the situation, so there are not too many primary sources.

As far as my knowledge goes about the Boshin War, each battalions (and regiments?) of the Tokugawa Shogunate had different uniforms such as the 12 regiments and battalions of the "Hoheigumi" presumably having different uniforms, as well as the "Denshutai" which I also asume would have different uniforms based on their battalion.

Where can I buy reproductions of Japanese military uniforms from the Meiji restoration/ boshin war/ Russo japanese war? I can't seem to find anything before WW1. if there was a website or seller that specialised in this that would be fantastic. (1841 to 1910 would be great)

The tricky part of your question is when you ask "Satsuma rebellion and presumably the Boshin War". Foreign involvement in the Boshin War was rather different than foreign involvement in the Satsuma Rebellion. American involvement perhaps even more so. By the time of the Satsuma Rebellion, the Japanese Military was relatively uniform.

  9. Why did the Boshin war end so quickly (just 1 year) - Reddit

    www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/11w8esk/why_did_the_boshin_war_end_so...

Here it is important to point out that the idea of the Boshin War as pro-Imperial vs pro-Bakufu/anti-Imperial is incorrect. How pro-war Tokugawa Yoshinobu was in the days prior to Toba-Fushimi is debatable. In the years following, he and ex-bakufu authors stressed that he did not want war and was dragged along for the ride.

Im gonna first say that the Meiji Emperor didn't really have a direct hand in this conflict. The opposition to the Shogunate was comprised of the 3 major provinces of Tosa, Satsuma, and Choshu who had long grievances with the Shogunate beginning all the way from the founding of the regime.

During the Japanese Civil War, there were many wars in Europe, including the Austro-Prussian War, the Prussian-French War, and the Russian-Osmans War. That's why many European countries have temporarily withdrawn from East Asia. If the Boshin War is prolonged, the first country that can influence them is Russia.
