Robert John Morris (September 30, 1914 – December 29, 1996) [1] was an American anti-communist activist who served as chief counsel to the United States Senate Subcommittee on Internal Security from 1951 to 1953 and from 1956 to 1958, was President of the University of Dallas and founded the now-defunct University of Plano.
Born in 1745, in New Brunswick, Province of New Jersey, British America, [1] Morris read law in 1770. [1] He entered private practice in New Brunswick from 1770 to 1776. [1] On September 6, 1776, by Joint Meeting of the New Jersey Legislature, Morris was appointed Clerk of Bergen County. [2]

Morris, a Democrat, became involved in the Tammany Hall political machine in the early 1840s. He was elected mayor in 1841 by a slim margin, and again in 1842 and 1843 by more substantial margins. While serving as mayor in 1841, Morris took part in the investigation and arrest of John C. Colt for the murder of Samuel Adams. [1] [2]
