Ida's grandson Augie Pabst would take on leadership roles at the Pabst Brewing Company after an auto racing career. August's son Joseph carried on his work at Schlitz, eventually becoming vice-president of the brewery. Many descendants of August Uihlein remained active with the company and the brewing industry at large.
Uihlein worked in the Uhrig Brewery in St. Louis from 1857 to 1867. Returning to Milwaukee in 1867, he joined what was then the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, formerly the Krug Brewery founded by his uncle August Krug in the 1840s. Busch married four times, having a total of 11 children. Two of his marriages ended in divorce. His third wife, Gertrude Buholzer (1927–2016), a native of Switzerland, was a Roman Catholic. Their seven children were raised in their mother's faith, and Busch was later received into that church, although the union was dissolved in 1978. [9]
