The 486 ft (148 m) tall neo-Romanesque City Investing Building is one of many buildings that can no longer be seen in New York today. It was built between 1906–1908 and was demolished in 1968. Around the building, there is a public plaza with information about the Stadt Huys, the Tavern and the archaeology project. The brass circular plaque on the sidewalk of the plaza has a map of the original street plan of New Amsterdam and there are colored outlines for the Stadt Huys and the King's House as the reminder of where it was.
It replaced the Neo-Gothic style Jay Gould House, which was demolished. The new house was designed both to complement and outshine the Isaac Stern House next door, at 858 Fifth Avenue. In 1923, the house was bought by Harry Payne Whitney , and in late 1925, it became the residence of his mother-in-law, Alice Claypoole Vanderbilt .
