In 1904, a railroad line owned by the Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad (later known as Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway or Katy) from Oklahoma City reached Cleveland and crossed the Arkansas River into Osage County. On May 27, 1904, the first oil well was spudded near the community, and it caused an influx of oil workers and other people.

The Northwestern Oklahoma Railroad (reporting mark NOKL) is a shortline railroad operating in Woodward, Oklahoma that operates approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) of track. Founded in 1973, the railroad provides switching services for industrial customers and interchanges with the BNSF Railway in Woodward.

In January 2010, in conjunction with BNSF, the SLWC launched unit crude oil train service between the Bakken oil fields and a terminal in Oklahoma. In July 2014 SLWC agreed to purchase the Sooner Sub line from the State of Oklahoma, subject to approval by the Surface Transportation Board; [2] the STB approved the transaction on July 29, 2014.
