The company was founded around 1880 by Kamiel Filliers, when he was granted a permit to distil jenever on his farm. This allowed him to make jenever in the winter, using grain he had grown on his own farm. This activity replaced the agricultural distillery set up by his uncle Ferdinand Bernard Filliers, which had been damaged by fire in 1863.

Jenever (English: / dʒ ə ˈ n iː v ər /, [1] Dutch: [jəˈneːvər] ⓘ), also known as Hollands, genever, genièvre, peket, or sometimes as Dutch gin (archaic: Holland gin [2] or Geneva gin), is the juniper-flavoured traditional liquor in the Netherlands, Belgium, and adjoining areas in northern France and northwestern Germany.
Founded in 1912, the tournament began as the Dutch Open, before a variety of sponsors resulted in numerous name changes over the years. KLM was the longest title sponsor; lasting from 1981 to 1990, and from 2004 to 2020. The tournament has been moved around the golfing calendar, but since 2010 it has been held in early September.
