Opposite the pier for the ferry to Exmouth is the Starcross engine house. A little farther along the river, the railway crosses the mouth of Cockwood harbour. Near here was the 1,285 feet long Exe Bight Pier, in use from 1869 for about ten years. On the opposite side of the river trains can sometimes be seen near Lympstone Commando railway station.
From 1961 the lifeboat was kept afloat in the river near the entrance to Exmouth docks. A boarding boat was kept on a davit that was lowered into the water to ferry the crew out to the lifeboat. The old lifeboat station by the beach was retained as a fund-raising display centre and, from 1966, was the base for an inshore lifeboat. [1]
It lies about 10 mi (16 km) south of the city of Exeter, 2 mi (3.2 km) southeast of Exmouth town centre and about 7.5 mi (12.1 km) southwest of Sidmouth. Directly to the west lies Exmouth Beach and to the east is Sandy Bay , a holiday beach, that can be reached either along the coastal path or through the large caravan park.
A new boathouse was built near the beach, although the lifeboat had to be taken across the road before it could be launched. It is part of a long strip of sand which is connected to the beach at Exmouth at low tide. Nearby are the Orcombe rocks, which is a famous spot for fossils. Sandy Bay is about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) south of the city of Exeter , 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) southeast of Exmouth and about 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) southwest of Sidmouth.
Dawlish Warren is located at the mouth of the Exe Estuary opposite Exmouth and has a beach, a National Nature Reserve [1] spanning 506 acres (2 km 2) and a golf course, which is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The opening of the station in 1861 in the Illustrated London News. The railway to Exmouth was opened on 1 May 1861. [1] The first train started from Exeter Station comprising eleven carriages drawn by the engine Comet. The train with its complement of 150 passengers arrived in Exmouth at 8.16am. [2]
