The Ford Tempo is a front-engine, front-drive, five passenger, two- or four-door sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford for model years 1984-1994, over a single generation. The successor of the Ford Fairmont , the Tempo marked both the downsizing of the Ford compact car line and its adoption of front-wheel drive .

For 1984, Mercury further updated its model range. Replacing the Zephyr, the front-wheel drive Mercury Topaz compact was introduced alongside the Ford Tempo, competing against the GM J-cars introduced for 1982. Sharing chassis underpinnings with the Escort/Lynx (on a longer wheelbase), the Topaz was developed as a sedan.
For 1982, both the 4.2-liter V8 option and the station wagon were moved to the more upscale Cougar model line. As Mercury transitioned its model line to front-wheel drive, the Zephyr was replaced by the Mercury Topaz for the 1984 model year. Following its use by Mercury, the Zephyr nameplate was briefly reused by Lincoln in 2006.
Mercury offered the first-generation Grand Marquis solely as a sedan in two-door and four-door configurations. For 1983 only, the Grand Marquis was offered as a station wagon (effectively a Colony Park without woodgrain trim); from 1984 onward, all full-size Mercury wagons were Colony Parks.
The MTX-II was also 4 speed manual transaxle but would replace the MTX-I in 1984 and be available until 1990 with the end of the 1st gen Escort & Lynx. It was supposed to be a stronger unit than the previous 4-speed MTX now designed to work with stronger axles and stronger transmission mounts of the new Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz from 1984 forward.
