"Sara Smile" is a song written and recorded by the American musical duo Hall & Oates. It was released as the third single from their album Daryl Hall & John Oates.The song was the group's first top 40 and first top ten hit in the US, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100.
Janna Allen (May 12, 1957 – August 25, 1993) was an American songwriter.She is best known as a co-writer of some of the biggest hits recorded by Hall & Oates, in collaboration variously with Daryl Hall, John Oates and her sister Sara Allen, who was Hall's longtime girlfriend and the person for whom the duo's hit song "Sara Smile" was written.
The album contained the ballad "Sara Smile", [16] a song Hall wrote for Sara Allen. [19] The album cover depicted Hall and Oates, overly made up with cosmetic blush to the point where they looked feminine, especially the long-haired and clean-shaven Hall.
She was the inspiration for the song "Sara Smile" [26] and a frequent collaborator with Hall & Oates. They broke up in 2001 for undisclosed reasons and were never married but have remained friends (Allen briefly appears in a May 2016 episode of Live from Daryl's House ).
The album's cover shows an androgynous-looking Hall and Oates, both wearing makeup, against a silver background. It was designed by Pierre LaRoche, a makeup artist who was responsible for much of the androgynous look of glam rock artists at the time, including creating the appearance of the Ziggy Stardust persona for David Bowie.
