The department currently has 13 work release facilities. All but two of these facilities is operated by contractors, who manage the daily safety and security and have oversight of the facilities full-time (24-hours a day, 7-days per week).
The Washington State Reformatory opened in 1910, making it the second oldest operational prison in Washington state, behind the Washington State Penitentiary. [1] The next facility opened was the Special Offender Unit in 1980. [6] In 1984 the Twin Rivers Corrections Center was opened. [7] It is now known as the Twin Rivers Unit.

With an operating capacity of 2,200, it is the largest prison in the state and is surrounded by wheat fields. It opened in 1886, three years before statehood.
