The flag flying on top of Mount Suribachi that Hayes helped raise was taken down. Hayes fought on the island until it was secure on March 26. The same day, he attended the service for the American troops buried at the 5th Marine Division Cemetery. Hayes boarded the USS Winged Arrow [3] and left Iwo Jima with his unit for Hawaii on March 27.
