William Clay Matthews Sr. (August 1, 1928 – March 23, 2017) was an American professional football lineman and patriarch of the Matthews family of football players. Matthews played for four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL), the first in 1950.
Matthews was born into a football family. His father, Clay Matthews Sr., played for the NFL in the 1950s. Matthews graduated from New Trier East High School in Winnetka, Illinois, in 1974. He and his younger brother, Bruce, both attended college at the University of Southern California, where both played on the USC Trojans football team.
Two of Matthews Sr.'s sons played in the NFL: Clay Matthews Jr. and Bruce Matthews.
