The council's former offices, known as the Tameside Administrative Centre, had been built on the same site in 1981. That building was demolished in 2016 to make way for Tameside One. Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England. [1] The population was 48,604 at the 2021 census. [2] Historically in Lancashire, it is on the north bank of the River Tame, in the foothills of the Pennines, 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Manchester.
Since its creation in 1974, Tameside has always been under Labour control, aside from 1978 to 1982 when the Conservatives held a majority. [2] In the most recent election in 2021, Labour lost one seat to the Conservatives, but increased their vote share by 4.6%, winning a total of 16 seats, with the Conservatives gaining 10.7% and winning 3 seats.

The town hall was the headquarters of Ashton-under-Lyne municipal borough but ceased to be the local seat of government when Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council was formed in 1974. [5] The vacant building became the home of the Museum of the Manchester Regiment, which had previously been based at Ladysmith Barracks, in 1987. [6]
