The house was built in 1616 for Matthias Hansen, who was a member of the city council and later served as mayor of Copenhagen from 1622 until his death in 1626. Hansen's daughter, Kirsten Madsdatter , was one of Christian IV 's mistresses and mother of Christian Ulrik Gyldenløve .
