Banbridge (/ b æ n ˈ b r ɪ dʒ / ban-BRIJ, [2] Irish: Droichead na Banna pronounced [d̪ˠɾˠɪçəd̪ˠ n̪ˠə ˈbˠan̪ˠə] [3]) is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland.It lies on the River Bann and the A1 road and is named after a bridge built over the River Bann in 1712.
The district was created as Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon on 1 April 2015 by merging the City and District of Armagh, Banbridge District and most of the Borough of Craigavon. The word "City" was added to the name on 24 February 2016, [3] to reflect Armagh's city status. The local authority is Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
In England, city status sometimes applies to civil parishes, such as with Ripon; though the status may not apply to the local government district which share their name. For example, the civil parishes of Lichfield and Chichester each hold city status, but Lichfield District and Chichester District in which they are situated do not.
Armagh City and District Council was a single district council until 2015 when it merged with Banbridge District Council and Craigavon Borough Council under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, sometimes colloquially referred to as the ABC council.

Banbridge District Council was the local authority of Banbridge in Northern Ireland. It was created in 1973 when the Local Government (Boundaries) Act (Northern Ireland) 1971 came into force. In May 2015, it merged with Armagh City and District Council and Craigavon Borough Council to form one of 11 new local government units.
Also notable is the reduction in importance of Winchester, the Anglo-Saxon capital city of Wessex. Although not a direct measure of population, the lay subsidy rolls of 1334 can be used as a measure of both a settlement's size and stature and the table gives the 30 largest towns and cities in England according to that report.
