Initially diesel-hauled passenger trains like the Northerner on the North Island Main Trunk had a separate steam heating van, but later the carriages of long-distance trains like the Overlander used electric heaters supplied by a separate power or combined power-luggage van. The South Wind Heater was invented by Canadian Harry J. McCollum, [1] who demonstrated his invention to the Stewart-Warner company in 1934. Production at the Chicago firm began a short time later, [ 2 ] with more than 3 million units installed in automobiles, aircraft, and military vehicles by 1948. [ 1 ]
A dual-fuel version (gas and diesel) was also developed, while the range had its final addition in 1995 with the PC2.6B long-stroke engine. This final version featured a cast-iron engine mounting, a simpler design and a power output of 750 kW per cylinder – four times the power of the original model from 1953.
Schematic diagram of typical coal-fired power plant steam generator highlighting the air preheater (APH) location. An air preheater is any device designed to heat air before another process (for example, combustion in a boiler), with the primary objective of increasing the thermal efficiency of the process.
A thermic fluid heater (TFH), [1] also known as a thermal oil heater, is a device used for indirect heat transfer through a thermic fluid. It heats the fluid to a desired temperature and then transfers that heat to various processes without any direct contact between the heating source and the product.
A radiant superheater is placed directly in the radiant zone of the combustion chamber near the water wall so as to absorb heat by radiation. A convection superheater is located in the convective zone of the furnace, in the path of the hot flue gases, usually ahead of an economizer.
