Martin and Louisa go to look for Chicken at Martin's late aunt Joan's old farm when the new owner reports he's seen the dog there. They find the dog, but cause a cattle stampede. Martin has a serious accident on a barbed wire fence and is seriously injured.

The radio show's original storyline centers on a preacher named Rev. John Ruthledge and all the people of a fictional suburb in Chicago called Five Points. The townspeople's lives all revolve around him, and the show's title refers to a lamp in his study that family and residents can see as a sign for them to find help when needed.
Starting in January 2008, Guiding Light moved from the traditional multi-camera style of filming to hand-held digital cameras. All of the show's traditional sets were scuttled and new four-wall sets were erected in their place, as well as two new permanent outdoor filming locations in New Jersey .

In 1980, the Dobsons were moved to As the World Turns, and were replaced by Douglas Marland.Marland had written for such veteran soap writers as Agnes Nixon and Irna Phillips (the creator of The Guiding Light) and had written on his own, as well as acted on As the World Turns in the early 1970s.
