Spec writing is also unique in that the writer must pitch the idea to producers. In order to sell the script, it must have an excellent title, good writing, and a great logline, laying out what the movie is about. A well-written logline will convey the tone of the film, introduce the main character, and touch on the primary conflict.

The Blood List is a survey of unproduced thriller and horror scripts voted upon by industry professionals. It is similar to the Black List and was created in 2009 by Kailey Marsh. [ 1 ] Steve Barton of Dread Central has called it "one of the most vital and necessary horror resources you'll ever need to break into the business".
The Black List tallies the number of "likes" various screenplays are given by development executives, and then ranks them accordingly. The most-liked screenplay is The Imitation Game, which topped the list in 2011 with 133 likes; it went on to win the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 87th Academy Awards in 2015.

Screenplays are eligible if they are not based on "previously published material". The Writer's Branch of the academy determines if a screenplay is adapted or original, based on possible sources in question, interviews given about the film and the film's publicity materials, and sometimes places screenplays in a different category than the Writers Guild of America.
