Prajavani was the leading Kannada newspaper for decades, until it was overtaken in circulation by Vijaya Karnataka (VK) in 2004. The gulf between PV and the upstart VK became huge for a while, but the two newspapers appear to be competing much more closely as of 2014, with PV having significantly recovered ground according to industry numbers. Pai was the eldest son of T. M. A. Pai, Padma Shri awardee and founder of the Manipal group of institutions.He was born on 20 June 1933 into the family with ten siblings. [1] [2] [3] He completed his schooling in the southern Indian city of Udupi from the Udupi Board School, and followed it up with his intermediate level education from the MGM college in Udupi.

The Sahitya Akademi Award-winning writer P. Lankesh was the founder and editor of Lankesh Patrike from 1980 until his death in 2000. Lankesh quit his job as an assistant professor of English at Bangalore University in 1980 to start Lankesh Patrike, the first Kannada tabloid, [1] which went on to have an enormous impact on Kannada culture and politics.
