The ship was named after Mount Earnslaw, a 2,889-metre (9,478 ft) peak at the head of Lake Wakatipu. She was to be 51.2 metres (168 ft 0 in) long, the biggest boat on the lake, and the largest steamship built in New Zealand. [4] Transporting the Earnslaw was no easy task. Lake Wakatipu comes from the original Māori name Whakatipu wai-māori. [1] With a length of 80 kilometres (50 mi), it is New Zealand's longest lake, and, at 289 km 2 (112 sq mi), its third largest. The lake is also very deep, its floor being below sea level (−110 metres), with a maximum depth of 420 metres (1,380 ft).
