John Marlan Poindexter (born August 12, 1936) is a retired United States naval officer and Department of Defense official. He was Deputy National Security Advisor and National Security Advisor during the Reagan administration .
He was the son of William Rice Poindexter and Martha Jane (Barrett) Poindexter. [1] After the death of his father in 1870, John attended Reagan High School in Morristown, Tennessee. [1] He became a planter and merchant. [1] He became a member of the Mississippi State Senate in 1916, representing the 16th district as a Democrat.
