Although never occupying the territory, Spain considered it part of its Central American territories, which then included portions of present-day Mexico and Guatemala.
Spain and Britain both laid claim to the land until Britain defeated the Spanish in the Battle of St. George's Caye (1798). [12] It became a British colony in 1840, and a Crown colony in 1862. Belize achieved its independence from the United Kingdom on 21 September 1981. [ 13 ]
The Convention of London (Spanish: Convención de Londres), also known as the Anglo-Spanish Convention, was an agreement negotiated between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Spain concerning the status of British settlements in the Mosquito Coast in Central America.
