John Skelton, also known as John Shelton (c. 1463 – 21 June 1529) was an English poet and tutor to King Henry VIII of England.Writing in a period of linguistic transition between Middle English and Early Modern English, Skelton is one of the most important poets of the early Tudor period.
In 1820, the poem was republished as a broadside and titled "The Little Maid and the Gentleman". [6] Some guidebooks and locals in Conwy, Wales, claim Wordsworth was inspired to write the poem after seeing a gravestone at St Mary and All Saints Church in the town; this gravestone is marked "We are Seven."
