Hamilton College is a private liberal arts college in the Clinton, New York, area. [4] It was established as the Hamilton-Oneida Academy in 1793 and received its charter as Hamilton College in 1812, in honor of Alexander Hamilton , one of its inaugural trustees, following a proposal made after his death in 1804.
Samuel Eells studied at Hamilton College from 1828 to 1832, a time when both the college and American society were in turmoil. The college was nearly bankrupt due to mismanagement, and the student body was torn apart by rivalries between underground debating and literary societies, primarily the Phoenix and the Philopeuthian.

The Emerson Literary Society [1] [failed verification] (ELS) is a co-ed, non-exclusive social society at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. Since 1882, ELS has operated on the Hamilton campus. From 1884-1995, the society operated a residence, open to all members.
