Ballasalla is the site of the mediaeval Monks' Bridge over the Silverburn river, which leads to the Manx National Heritage site of Rushen Abbey. This forms part of the Story Of Mann set of attractions established in 1989 and now part of an island-wide series of attractions.
Monks from Rushen Abbey would sometimes have farms in the north of the island. A packhorse bridge was built in around 1350 to allow the monks to cross the nearby Silverburn River. Known today as The Monks' Bridge (or The Crossag), it is one of few surviving packhorse bridges in the British Isles.
The Silver Burn river rises near the South Barrule and flows under the Monks Bridge at Ballasalla, reaching the sea at Castletown harbour. The coast line is low, but rocky and dangerous. Castletown Bay is a deep but exposed and dangerous inlet between Langness and Scarlett.
A medieval bridge dating to the 12th century built by Cistercian monks spans the river close to Rushen Abbey. [10] A longer walk is from Rushen Abbey, along the river, and to Poulsom Park beside Castletown railway station. The section from the A3 south to the A7 in Ballasalla makes up the Silverdale Conservation Area, one of Isle of Man's historic districts, and includes Silverdale Glen Cafe, Monk's Bridge, and Rushen Abbey's ruins.
