New Kent County was established in 1654 from York County, Virginia. In 1642, it was renamed Northampton County. However, in 1663, Northampton County was divided into two counties.
Cities in Virginia are thus similar to unitary authorities in some countries. The United States Census Bureau treats all cities in Virginia as county-equivalents. Other municipalities, even though they may be more populous than some existing independent cities, are incorporated as "towns", and as such form part of a county.

The ceremonial county of Berkshire (which is entirely made up of unitary authorities – Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, West Berkshire, Windsor and Maidenhead and Wokingham) is divided into nine parliamentary constituencies: three borough constituencies and six county constituencies.
There are 104 civil parishes in the ceremonial county of Berkshire, most of the county being parished; Reading is completely unparished; Bracknell Forest, West Berkshire and Wokingham are entirely parished. At the 2001 census, there were 483,882 people living in the 104 parishes, accounting for 60.5 per cent of the county's population.
