The University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA), which was merged with the University of Texas at Brownsville in 2015 to form the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), had a football team when it was known as Edinburg College and was a junior college. [2]
Before the UTRGV merger, the University of Texas–Pan American sponsored eight men's and nine women's teams in NCAA-sanctioned sports. About a year before the merger, the UT System announced that UTRGV would inherit the UTPA athletic program, [ 34 ] and the UTPA Broncs officially became the UTRGV Vaqueros on July 1, 2015.
It served as the home of Rio Grande Valley FC Toros of the USL Championship from 2017 to 2023, and currently serves as the home of the UTRGV Vaqueros football team.
