U.S. Route 321 / Tennessee State Route 73 is the community's main road, connecting Townsend in the west with Pigeon Forge in east, where it merges with U.S. 441. This section of 321/73 is known as "Wears Valley Road".
The valley was originally named “Crowson Cove” after Aaron Crowson who first settled in the area in 1792. By 1900, however, it was renamed “Wear Cove” after Samuel Wear (1753–1817), a Revolutionary War veteran who erected a fort near the entrance to the valley in what is now Pigeon Forge .
Col. Townsend initially opposed the effort, but after some wavering, sold at base price 76,000 acres (310 km 2) of his Little River Lumber tract in 1926 to what would eventually become the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Henry Whitehead Cabin, constructed 1895–1896. This cabin, located on Forge Creek Road near Chestnut Flats, was built by Matilda "Aunt Tildy" Shields and her second husband, Henry Whitehead (1851–1914). Shields' sons from her first marriage were prominent figures in the cove's moonshine trade.
Surrounding towns—notably Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, and Townsend in Tennessee, and Cherokee, Sylva, Maggie Valley, and Bryson City in North Carolina—receive a significant portion of their income from tourism associated with the park. The park features three main entrances, located in Gatlinburg, Cherokee, and Townsend.
